Located on the shores of Lake Phelps,
Somerset Place was one of the upper South’s largest plantations,
active from 1785 – 1865. Today it includes 31 of the original
lakeside acres and seven of the original 19th-century buildings.
Visit this remarkable historic site; take the interpretative tour
that meshes the lifestyles of all the plantation’s residents into
one concise chronological social history of the plantation’s 80-year
lifespan. Through one general tour, visitors explore the lives of
the plantation’s owners, enslaved community, employed whites, and
free blacks. No admission. Please call 252-797-4560 to schedule a
